The Sacrament of Baptism

The birth of a child is a very special and joyful occasion for parents. Here in Baldoyle Parish, we are really glad to share this joy and we warmly welcome and support parents who wish to have their child baptised and received into the community of “The People of God”.

Baptism is the first of the three sacraments known as the ‘Sacraments of Initiation’ into full membership of the Church. The other two sacraments are First Communion and Confirmation.

Parents are the first and most important teachers of their child in the ways of faith. In presenting their child for baptism, parents are asked to be the best of teachers,  bearing witness to the faith by what they say and what they do.

Parents are asked to collect and complete an Application Form and return it to the Parish Office.  We require a copy of the child's Birth Certificate, which must accompany the Application Form.

Please also refer to our Privacy Statement below which should be downloaded and signed.

Parents are asked to give some thought in choosing Godparents for the child. The role of Godparents is to be supportive of the child’s Parents in bringing up their child in the Faith. God parents should be at least sixteen years of age and be baptised and confirmed.

For the celebration of Baptism parents are reminded to bring:

1. Baptismal Shawl which symbolises our new life in Christ and being embraced by God’s love.

2. Baptismal Candle which will be lit from the Paschal Candle during the ceremony. The lighted candle is a sign of the Risen Christ and also symbolises the living presence of Christ in your child.
